The story opens up at Lettie Johnson's house after the funeral of her mother Vera. Vera was the matriarch of the family who believed in prayer. Vera's strong belief was in her motto, "You can forget a lot of things, but don't forget to pray!" Now that Vera has passed, the mantle has fallen on Lettie. As we soon discover in the lives of Lettie and her daughters Charmayne and Nicole, "dysfunction" is a member of everybody's family.
